چکیده

Visual search for a target among distractors is often speeded when the target-defining feature is repeated from trial to trial, compared to when it changes. It has been proposed that whether this intertrial priming effect is perceptual in nature or not, and how strong it is, depends on the perceptual ambiguity of the display. Using the event-related potential (ERP) method, Experiment 1 assessed whether perceptual ambiguity indeed resulted in increased priming, by comparing target repetitions and changes in a condition with a target-resembling distractor to a condition without such a distractor. Priming effects on response times were indeed greater in the presence of a distractor. Moreover, EEG analyses revealed latency shifts and amplitude differences in the P1 and N2pc components for the same condition, consistent with a perceptual locus of intertrial priming. Experiment 2 confirmed this by varying the perceptual similarity of the distractor to the target. Priming benefits increased with increasing similarity.

Feature priming and the capture of visual attention: Linking two ambiguity resolution hypotheses

Visual search for a unique stimulus is often faster when the feature defining this target is repeated. Recent research has related this feature priming to ambiguity: priming effects appear stronger when the search target is perceptually ambiguous, as when the search array contains a salient distractor. Here we link the ambiguity that underlies feature priming to ambiguity in neural representati...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

Reward Guides Vision when It's Your Thing: Trait Reward-Seeking in Reward-Mediated Visual Priming

Reward-related mesolimbic dopamine is thought to play an important role in guiding animal behaviour, biasing approach towards potentially beneficial environmental stimuli and away from objects unlikely to garner positive outcome. This is considered to result in part from an impact on perceptual and attentional processes: dopamine initiates a series of cognitive events that result in the priming...

Predictive codes for forthcoming perception in the frontal cortex.

Incoming sensory information is often ambiguous, and the brain has to make decisions during perception. "Predictive coding" proposes that the brain resolves perceptual ambiguity by anticipating the forthcoming sensory environment, generating a template against which to match observed sensory evidence. We observed a neural representation of predicted perception in the medial frontal cortex, whil...

Intertrial priming stemming from ambiguity: A new account of priming in visual search

Sequential effects are ubiquitous in experimental psychology. Within visual search, performance is often speeded when participants search for the same target twice in a row, as opposed to two different targets. Here, we investigate such intertrial priming. Two experiments show that factors influencing search processes affect the presence and size of intertrial priming: It is larger when there a...
